The only problem I have had so far is when I disconnected the modem from the USB port and when I plugged it back in, after awhile I kept getting a modem error and I could not connect to the internet. I switched back to the port that it was initially plugged into and it has worked fine ever since. I bought a new imac computer and I did not realize the apple does not come with a dialup modem as part of the computer. After reading the troubleshooting section of the manual that came with the modem, it mentions you may need to plug it back into the same port that was used when installing the software.
The final message, of course, is always disconnect the telephone line when the weather gets violent if you want to avoid expensive damage from lightning. Otherwise the USB modem from USRobotics works fine and I can recommend it. The other problem I have is that I'm not getting any of the dialup sounds you normally hear with the internal modem or the Apple external USB modem. The telephone line was still connected at the time. At that point the power light comes on, the DATA light starts blinking and within about a minute you are connected. To reconnect I have to disconnect the USB modem, wait a few seconds and reconnect.
Once again, the POWER light stay OFF until you start the connect process. I had tried an Apple USB modem but it behaved the same as the malfunctioning the internal modem. The power light does not come on until you launch the Internet Connect application, click on connect and manually enter the password. This may not bother most people. The USRobotics USB modem works OK with the Mac iBook but I found that for a successful connection to the server the modem must start from having the POWER light OFF. I purchased this USB modem to use with an Apple iBook G4 running OSX 10.4.11 because the internal modem had been fried during a fierce electrical storm.
With the iBook up and running, plug in the modem and connect the phone line. However, once you have finished and disconnected, the modem's power light stays ON, and I found that if I try to reconnect, it fails.

I had to write to USR to get suggestions on how to get it working. As many times as I tried to load it, the software would not recognize the hardware. Everything was easy from there and it now works fine. The modem was packaged well and included everything I needed to install it. However, with Windows7 I couldn't get the drive to install with the wizard. They took me through a sequence within the control panel that finally got the hardware to install.
They are, to a certain degree, electronically challenged. I purchased this for my parents who live out of state. The fact that they didnt have to call me for installation help and it worked as it should is in itself a testament to the product.
